(Memphis) – The following is a statement from Terry Roland who has led the fight in the election dispute over the results in the State Senate District 29.

“I’ve said all along this race is not about Terry Roland. It was about restoring the people’s confidence, faith, and trust in their elected officials. Somewhere along the way, we all know it became about the integrity of the ballot.

“Was it right to allow convicted felons and dead people the opportunity to vote? We said no. The people of Shelby County have said no. The people of Tennessee said no. Finally, after weeks of delay, the State Senate has said no.

“We’ve learned so much — how we need to fix the broken election process, how every vote is sacred, and how no one vote should be taken for granted.

“Our campaign brought so many people together from every part of this diverse district…black and white…rich and poor…for a cause greater than ourselves.

“This contest has never been about me and our campaign. Even though I am confident of our success in the election, justice has been served. So in the spirit of Democracy and fairness, I am withdrawing my name from consideration to fill the vacancy in the Tennessee State Senate. I’m confident the Shelby County Election Commission will do the right thing.

“Thanks to all of those who have helped is along the way. I am running for this seat again in November, and we will continue to carry our campaign of trust and integrity to every part of our district.

“My mother always taught me your good name and your integrity means more than any one accomplishment. She also said that good things happen to those who wait. Mom always seems to be right, and in this case, I know I am doing the right thing.”
